MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY

Our Mission

The HatHats Foundation will fund individuals, not-for-profit organisations, local community causes and registered charities with causes close to the hearts of our employees and the communities our businesses operate in or relies upon through its supply chain.

The HatHats Foundation will mean we can make a real difference to the lives of more people, and organisations. The Foundation will connect with smaller, locally based organisations and individuals who desperately need funding, equipment, assistance or general support. 100% of donations are made to good causes, all admin fees and associated costs will be funded by HatHats Coffee Company Limited.

Many of our staff have passions and charity driven goals of their own.
We can help them achieve this and work with them through the Foundation.

GRANT APPLICATION

FAQs

When can I apply for a grant?
You may apply for a grant at any time. Trustees will meet quarterly but procedures will exist to give approvals between meeting dates if necessary.
What is the application process?
Applications will need to provide a clear outline of how and when the grant will be spent, are much more likely to be approved faster.

Once you have submitted your application via our online form, you will receive an acknowledgement by e-mail.We will assess all acceptable applications on a case by case basis.

Please note large grants are the exception however and most of our grant awards are under £10,000.
What are the guidelines for bidding?
Your bid must align with our mission to provide relief for those in need: age, disability, ill-health, educational or financial.

You must sign and accept our standard Terms and Conditions.

You must agree to our Privacy & Data Protection Policy.
This will also include our rights to film and use material for marketing and advertising purposes.

You must agree to our Equality and Diversity Policy.
I entered my application, when will I know if I am eligible?
Thank you for submitting an application.

We aim to make a decision on 95% of grant applications within 4 months of receipt.

Applications for larger grants can take up to 6 months.
Is there anything else I should know?
We will not publish the dates of our Trustee meetings.
What are you unlikely to fund?
Projects that are completed by the time of our decision.

Projects that support a political or religious persuasion (where funding might be expected to be available from other sources).

Statutory services which include, but not limited, to local or national authorities, NHS hospitals or services, prisons and state schools except where the school is wholly for students with additional needs and where Government funding exceeds 50% or where the provision falls outside the scope of traditional educational funding.

Universities, further education colleges or independent schools except where the facility is wholly for students with additional needs or clear demonstrative hardship can be demonstrated for an individual student, however this funding needs to be secured by the student not the establishment.

Other grant making charities.

Overseas projects in territories not essential to our supply chain, the exception is coffee growing regions we source from as well as some dedicated relief projects for causes raised by our staff where urgent humanitarian support is needed.

Meet Our Trustees

LOUIS HURST
HatHats Founding Director
Founding Director Louis Hurst working to setup the charity for 3 years before it became registered.
With his mantra 'A business that makes just money, is a poor business'. Louis was keen to develop something to give back and do good.
CLLR RACHEL CARNAC
Ward Councillor for Reculver /  Deputy Leader of Canterbury Council
Cllr Rachel Carnac is a huge believer in community spirit, something that reflects the values of the HatHats Foundation in bucket loads.
Rachel also owns a business that organises events in the specialty metals sector, this means she has a lot of interest in the developing world. She started out her career as a financial reporter covering coffee, cocoa and sugar and is passionate about developing sustainable and fair supply chains. We are so excited to have her on board.
GOFF PAIN
Director of ExPol Education
Goff has been working alongside CEO Louis Hurst for over 15 years. They first met when Goff worked for Kent Police, retired in 2014, Goff now has a First Aid company and is the Chair of Governors at his Wateringbury Primary School. Goff has the kind-spirited giving back attitude that any charity encapsulates.
ANGELA SYSON
Retired HatHats Accountant
Angela had worked for HatHats for over 8 years. She helped develop the company to where it is now. She has a passion for doing good so it was a no-brainer to join the Foundation. Angela has now retired but wants to keep a hand in HatHats so is investing time into the HatHats Foundation.
ANITA BRIGHTLEY-HODGES
Family Business Specialist
Anita is a long-term friend of Louis, first meeting in Uganda many years ago, it was clear they both shared the same interests. Anita is a serial entrepreneur, teacher, and mentor. She is a family business expert and helps family businesses facing the challenges of succession. Anita is involved because she believes 'the HatHats Foundation can really make a difference to people's lives in very practical ways - I believe we will do amazing things together".
JON WATSON
Executive Principal of the Chief Executive at Canterbury Academy Trust.
Jon has worked alongside Louis since 2019 supporting the HatHats Barista Academy and the Amelix Academy Enterprise. Jon is delighted to get involved in the Foundation.
HANNAH WOODGATE
HatHats Operations Manager
Hannah joined HatHats in 2019 as a trainee barista and now oversees the day to day of HatHats Coffee. Now joining the HatHats Trustees, she is the definition of a team player who has had first hand experience and involvement with the Foundation on her trip to Kampala in 2023. We're delighted to have her on board.
